A very famous and popular artist and director that I follow on tumblr called LeSean Thomas recently was asked a very interesting question.

" Q. Hey LeSean, I'm a long time fan! If you are posting things online, is it best to draw your own original creations, or just whatever you like to draw?
LeSean: Personally, I think it should just be whatever you like. Your intentions are really the bones of it all; Do you want to be popular? Then perhaps doing things that a lot of people like to see is your avenue (Fan art). The pros are, the chances of getting popular by drawing great versions of Spiderman, Superman or the Justice League or something that has a large following are usually good (if drawn really well).

The cons of being well-known as a fan artist is you’re getting famous off of something well-known you had no part in creating. You don’t own it, you most-likely can’t sell lots of that property (or run the risk at some point of being sued by the actual owners/creators). Also, people will be less likely to invest in your own creations that are practically unknown and would want to see you do more of that “thing” they like you for.

But again, it really depends on the mindset. Some people actually love being known for being the “best _______ artist” and that’s their career. Others, not so much. In the end though, If you’re having fun doing it, that should count.

have fun, man!

And this had left me thinking about how am I going right now with that I draw. As many might know, I draw a lot of fan art, the most had been star wars, transformers, and mlp fan art, and many more different ones; and I had of course noticed that those are my most viewed and most popular ones, especially mlp in terms of amount of views and favorites, which I am very grateful, cause it gave me so much publicity outside of dA on places like EquestriaDaily.com.
But here's the thing though, I had also heard from some other artists their advice that one mustn't just be a fan artist because you won't always be taken seriously in the professional world, that it is better to just create your own original artworks that belongs to you.
And I definitely had seen these, I know several artists that make nothing but original content, and they manage to make a living out of it. And to tell the truth this is something that I wished to seriously want, because I do have this drive, this desire for creating stuff that is belongs to me. It is true that some people get lucky with creating fan art of something, and that fan art eventually will even give them a job at a major studio or corporation, however I feel that with the fanart  I draw, there's no way that's ever gonna happen because of my rather chaotic art styles.
I'm not saying that I want to quit making fan art, no way, I know that the grand majority of my watchers only follow me for certain fan arts, but at least they are still watching me, and that's alright with me even if they never say anything. And for a long time I used to just draw what I thought most people wanted to see the most, but ever since 2013 I'll say that now I personally only draw what I want, what I like the most.
Like LeSean said, I should have fun with drawing, and not worry much about what other people or whatever it is the reason they watch me.
I still have  a strong desire to create original material and not fan art, but I feel I should take baby steps and take my time with creating my own universe that hopefully people may like.
