Smaug by Raikoh-illust Smaug by Raikoh-illust
Saw The Desolation of Smaug a few days back, so I wanted to do a quick paint (about 50 minutes) of what was undeniably the best part of the movie the Dragon Smaug.
The movie itself, well it did had many faults and moments that made me roll my eyes at the changes they did to the movie, and seriously why so little screen time for Bilbo, he is meant to be main character, I could tell where they added stuff that weren't in the book that were just weak and pointless, but that's the problem for making a relatively short novel into a 9 hour movie epic trilogy. At least the whole Smaug and Bilbo scene was worth the ticket to watch.

As for me the movie was good itself, but Smaug was amazingly done.

My same thoughts.  Lots of needless stuff added to pad out this movie, and Bilbo should be the star...but at least they got Smaug right (First film I said "At least Gollum's riddle scene was good).

Great paint! Great paint.
You caught this nicely with the cracked look as the fire wells up from inside. Great picture.

The movie was lacking great substance, and the parts with Smaug were the only ones I really enjoyed with the way he moved and the detail to him.

The best part of the movie, indeed. The dragon was my the only character I liked throughout the movie

I believe most of the stuff that was not in the book were in other books(Well, that is what my dad says, anyway. I only read through the Hobbit, and none of the other books) The stuff with Gandalf was definitely an improvement, because when I first read it my reaction was along the lines of "why is the all powerfull* wizard leaving these guys on their own at the parts where the most danger finds them?". I realized eventually that yeah, he had other business to take care of, and the movie shows what he was doing.
As for nitpicking, you know the part where they get to the forges and stand behind the pillars as Smaug blows fire at them? They would still be quite burned, even with my headcanon of Dwarfs(spelling?) being more fire-resistant than humans. Adding in Legolas was okay(Especially when they sneaked in the Gimli joke), but Tauriel and Kili having a romance in that short of a time is a bit off. In another movie I would be fine with it, but for this reality it does not work because Elves and Dwarfs do not get along at all. It took a certain set of circumstances and months or stuff happening for Legolas and Gimli to become friends, so this quick romance seems a bit..... like if Disney made Romeo and Juliet.

BUT ERHMAHGERDS SMAUG!!!!!!!! I love his voice, it was a good match for him. It was calm, and a bit sophisticated, even when trying to grab Bilbo, but was not completely devoid of emotion. And just that spot where it cut off "I am fire. I am.... Death!" I saw that part, watched it cut to black and the commercials came up, and I just...

Agreed with you on the review.  I love fantasy films and I love watching them over and over, but....Didn't think much of this.  Saw it once, it was ok.  Have no desire to see it twice.  The highpoint is definitely Bilbo versus Smaug.

Smaug looks amazing. I can't wait to see the movie! I really like how you did his eyes. You can tell by looking at them that he isn't just a typical dragon.

The Lord of the Rings was condensed excssively. The Hobbit is being stretched out excessively. When will they get it right? lol

The extended editions of LOTR have a better feel to them as a whole then the normal cinematic versions. But be prepared to sit down and watch them all. They come close to 12-14 all up I think.

Awesome drawing of Smaug. To be honest i really don't want to watch Hobbit 2.
Mostly because I felt that the original Hobbit movie had too much filler and not enough plot. Also I never understood why they had to make the Hobbit as a 3 hour trilogy when the LOTR films where single films.

I actually really enjoyed this film, more than I expected. In fact it may be one of the best films this year one you begin to look away from the source material and focus on the film as a whole.
